Experiences in School

Activity:

Listen to the audio files below. These are stories from people who used to be undocumented immigrants in the U.S., but for one reason or another, had to to return to Mexico where they were interviewed. They will be talking about their middle and elementary school experiences. Take notes on parts you find interesting.

Meet Luisa. Luisa was brought to the U.S. when she was 6 years old.

Let’s listen to two parts of Luisa’s Story:

Luisa
Luisa discusses an unkind teacher
Luisa talks about the Scholastic Book Fair

Write down some initial thoughts you have about Luisa’s experiences. Have you ever felt the same way as Luisa? Do you like the same things as her?

Meet Rodolfo. Rodolfo came to the U.S. in 1st grade. He was about 6 or 7.

Let’s hear from Rodolfo about his elementary and middle school experience:

Rodolfo
Rodolfo talks about being excluded because of his identity after elementary school

What did you think about Rodolfo’s experience with identity? What was your transition from elementary to middle school like?

Meet Gustavo. Gustavo was brought to the U.S. when he was just 2 years old!

Let’s listen to Gustavo talk about his favorite class in school:

Gustavo
Gustavo discusses his love for science class in Mexico

Do you like science class? What do you think about his opportunities in Mexico vs the United States?

Activity:

Using the notes you have taken, draw a t-chart and identify similarities and differences between the Luisa, Rodolfo, and Gustavo’s experiences and yours in school. When you are done, move on to Lesson 4.
